The Spinalis Health Program/Spinalis Health Navigator is a model for health promotion in the rehabilitation of persons with spinal cord injury. The model was developed by the Spinalis Foundation and with funding by The Swedish Inheritance Fund Commission (Allmänna Arvsfonden).

This guide to an active and healthy lifestyle is written primarily for You. For those of you who live with a physical impairment and want more information, who are keen to get in better shape, and who have a desire for a healthy lifestyle and its positive effects. But it is also intended for family and friends, personal assistants, rehabilitation professionals, and primary health providers who want to advance their understanding. The authors are Anna-Carin Lagerström and Kerstin Wahman.

The book provides adapted programs based on scientific research and clinical experience as well as tips and advice from individuals living with physical impairments.

Some information in this book relates to specific issues for persons with spinal cord injuries (SCI). This is simply because we are most active within and most knowledgeable about rehabilitation following SCI. But whatever you are dealing with: paralysis, spasticity, limb amputation, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, or similar challenges – we believe you will be able to make good use of the various health tools provided in this book.

The authors
The Swedish authors, both physiotherapists and health coaches: Anna-Carin Lagerström, RPT, MSc, Health Educator and Kerstin Wahman, RPT, PhD have dedicated many years of professional work to pioneer clinical practice and scientific studies in health and lifestyle for persons living with physical impairments, especially in the field of spinal cord injury.

Food, weight and health for people with spinal cord injury

The purpose of this brochure is to help you gain knowledge and awareness about the risk of developing overweight and obesity, what you can do to avoid becom- ing too heavy, and the general importance of diet for health and wellness.

One of the pillars of health and wellness is healthy food. This is true for everyone. The fact is that unhealthy eating habits is at the top of the list of risk factors
for the most common lifestyle diseases globally: cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and some forms of cancer.

This brochure is intended for those who have a spinal cord injury and answers common questions such as: What dietary guidelines apply? How should I eat to avoid extra kilos? What should I do if I want to lose weight?

Even if your background for physical impairment is not the result of a spinal cord injury, for example, you have Multiple sclerosis, Cerebral palsy, or have suffered a stroke or amputation, you can bene t greatly from the tips and advice on these pages.
